Process Technology for PUR-Insulated Pipes of Any Size

Insulated pipe systems are the foundation of efficient district heating and cooling networks, oil and gas pipelines, industrial process lines, and hot-water installations.  Polyurethane has become the insulation material of choice, replacing traditional materials such as mineral wool because it delivers superior thermal performance with a thinner insulation layer, while also ensuring a long service life for pipe systems.

Three Processes to Meet Any Requirements

We are experts in all the relevant manufacturing processes for PUR-insulated pipes and choose the right option for each case based on pipe dimensions, production volumes, and quality requirements.

Additional innovative process variants include spray manufacturing of pipes, either through continuous spray application or as a pure polyurethane solution for highly efficient HVAC applications.

01

High-Volume Production

In this case, we rely on a continuous production process. The process pipe is fed continuously through the system while the polyurethane foam is applied to a U-shaped film that subsequently wraps around the pipe. This ensures that the foam does not have to travel a long flow path, but rather expands uniformly from the inside outward, resulting in consistent density distribution along the entire length of the pipe.

02

Small Production Runs and Fixed-Length Pipes

For smaller production runs and fixed-length pipes, we use the traditional discontinuous process. The reactive mixture is injected at high speed into the cavity between the process pipe and the outer casing, where it expands from the bottom upward. Turbulence during filling is effectively prevented through specially designed mixhead technology, ensuring controlled and uniform foam application.

03

Individual Pipes

For the highest quality requirements in individual pipe production, we employ the mixhead withdrawal process. A specially developed mixhead is guided through the pipe cavity on a lance and applies the reactive mixture evenly along the entire pipe length as it is withdrawn. This laminar application creates a homogeneous density distribution and reduces raw material consumption by 10 to 15% compared with the traditional process.

Our pipe production lines

  • Uniform density distribution through process-specific optimized foam application

  • 10–15% raw material savings with the mixhead withdrawal process

  • Processing of environmentally friendly blowing agents such as cyclopentane using explosion-proof process technology

  • Flexible production ranging from small-diameter pipes to large pipeline dimensions

  • Continuous adjustment of the PUR formulation to ambient temperature through automatic process control

  • Suitable for both fixed pipe lengths and continuous pipe production
